Evelyn and Kurtis | Engagement Adventure at Orokawa Bay | Waihi Beach, New Zealand

August 22, 2019

Get ready for an adventure-filled engagement session on a picturesque secluded beach in Orokawa Bay, near Waihi Beach!

Evelyn + Kurtis – this laid back and fun-loving couple are one-of-a-kind! Their story began in Morrinsville, the small town where they grew up and attended school together. They first became close friends during high school and share a mutual love for adventuring outdoors and annual summer holidays to Matarangi Beach. Over time, Evelyn and Kurtis realised that they saw one another as more than ‘just’ friends and their relationship grew from a solid foundation of friendship, long conversations, and a lot of laughter – as only the best ones do! They are celebrating 3.5 years together now and their love keeps growing sweeter and richer with each passing year!

When it came to the proposal last October, Kurtis organised a surprise birthday hike for Evelyn from Waihi Beach to the secluded Orokawa Bay where he planned to get down on one knee and pop the question. Kurtis was all nerves and excitement as the day finally arrived. It took a bit of convincing to get Evelyn to agree to the walk since she was recovering from a cold and a little reluctant for the long trek ahead. In the end Kurtis’s persistence paid off! They did the walk. He finally asked THE big question….and she said YES!!!

When Evelyn suggested making the journey back to Orokawa Bay for their engagement photos, I was more than happy to oblige! Not only is it a super sentimental spot for them, but it’s also a gorgeous beach lined with sprawling pōhutukawa trees and plenty of room to run around, goof off, and get snuggly without a ton of people around.

On the day of our shoot there were scattered showers and high winds forecasted, but Evelyn and Kurtis dressed warm and turned up prepared to embrace the elements! While it was overcast in the beginning, the clouds miraculously cleared for a perfect winter afternoon by the time we arrived in Orokawa Bay, where we were lucky enough to be sheltered from the westerlies.

We started off the session with hot chocolates and conversation to get warmed up and comfortable before exploring Waihi Beach. Evelyn and Kurtis made good use of the caves at low tide and the epic tyre swing before a hilarious game of tag on the beach. Then we made the walk over to Orokawa Bay where we chilled out to some good music, goofed around, and laughed a ridiculous amount before settling into the sweet and intimate part of the session.

It was such an amazing time capturing the love that Evelyn and Kurtis share! If the engagement session is anything to go by, their wedding is going to be incredible! I’m excitedly counting down the days until December!!!
